From the Other Side

In my film,¬†From the Other Side, I wanted to construct a narrative which portrayed the hardship caused by¬†emigration. Thus, I constructed a script around the idea of two estranged lovers in the 1940s, separated by difficulties of obtaining an affidavit, which was a very real problem at the time; according to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, in late 1938, 125,000 Jewish refugees lined up outside US consulates hoping to obtain 27,000 visas under the existing immigration quota. By June 1939, the number of applicants had increased to over 300,000–most visa applicants were unsuccessful. Filming a period piece was a bit of a challenge, so I focused on the mundanity of one individual’s life in order to narrow the scope of the project. Enjoy!
